Work on Locks 20 - 17 is nearing completion and you can follow the progress simply clicking on this link
When the centre was built in the 70’s its original concept was as a canal museum at the top of the Fourteen Locks but it never became a major success even though the Cefn Flight its original name are the most unique in the country. Many things contributed to this the main three being that the centre was only open in the summer months, it lacked canal exhibits relevant to the area and staff with an in depth knowledge of the history of the Monmouthshire Canal but in saying that the staff have never lacked enthusiasm .
The Canal Trust became involved with the Centre following the National Trail boat Festival in Newport in May 2000, sending volunteers to the Centre on the weekends to talk to the public about the history of the canal. We also organised guided walks and introduced artist to the Centre and started to exhibit their work.
The Trust have now leased the Centre off Newport City Council and over the winter period of 2007/8 the Centre was re built adding a meeting room and a wonderful tea room, The Dadford Tea Room as we have named it in honour of the engineer who designed the flight over two hundred years ago.
We opened on the 23 rd of May 2008 and we are just coming to our first anniversary and hope by then to have had about 33,000 visitors through the door. The meeting room has also been a success hired many times over the year.
